Def Jam Recordings' History

The Label's founding (1984) Rick Rubin, a fan of hip-hop and punk-rock, co-founded Def Jam while attending New York University. With the intention of creating unadulterated, genuine hip-hop records, he founded the label in his dorm room. Russell Simmons, a young businessman with strong ties to the rap industry, soon joined as a co-founder. T La Rock and Jazzy Jay's "It's Yours" (1984) was the first official Def Jam release. However, LL Cool J, a young rapper with a talent for powerful lyrics and memorable hooks, was the label's first big signing.
